Comp Play

A new board gaming podcast and YouTube channel approached us to help build out their brand and help them to stand out from the crowd. Here's how we developed their identity.

Brand development for a new board game podcast

Comp Play is a new board game podcast brand with a primary home on YouTube, supported by social media channels and a Discord community. The team approached Game If You Are in late 2025 to build its develop its identity from scratch and produce key visual and multimedia content ahead of its launch.

Comp Play wanted something slick, modern and impactful – while also setting the brand apart from other board game and wargaming channels on the web. We embarked on a collaborative project to achieve just that.

Having developed this concept and build a brand bible, we began to look at the key visual assets that would comprise the brand. Given its multimedia nature, we needed to adapt the identity for different platforms and circumstances, and flexibility and adaptability would be key.

We crafted a number of static templates for Comp Play to use around the web and in print – making subtle tweaks to colour to allow as close a match as possible between the brand’s on-screen identity and CMYK print. We also created a number of different backgrounds to be used in different circumstances, depending on how much weight should be given to imagery versus clarity of text.

Finally, we moved to the video element of the project. Having its primary home on YouTube, Comp Play required introductory and continuity segments to provide consistency throughout their content. Using the logo itself as a key visual cornerstone, we began to work on a number of different animations incorporating it.

For continuity sequences, to reinforce the competition aspect of the brand, we turned the brand’s logo into a ‘coin flip’ animation – with two variants, one landing on the skull and the other landing on the smiley face. We also crafted a high-impact, energetic intro sequence for Comp Play’s visualised podcasts.
