Free marketing support for indie game developers from underrepresented backgrounds!

Free marketing support for indie game developers from underrepresented backgrounds!

Everyone should be able to share their game with the world. That's why we want to help.

Great games come from great people – from all walks of life, and all corners of planet Earth. But the most highly visible games are often from a very small subset of the indie game development community. Marketing can be expensive, and access to the right circles of discovery can present a challenge for indies from underrepresented communities, backgrounds, identities, or parts of the world.

That’s why we’ve launched The Indie Spotlight – a new initiative offering free games marketing help to the developers and studios who might otherwise not be given a fair shot.

How it works.

We want to hear from developers working on unfunded or self-funded game projects, who are from underrepresented communities, backgrounds, identities, or parts of the world.

In the first instance, we’ll be offering strategic and tactical consultation packages worth approximately £1,000. The goal of these packages is to review your game and marketing offering, and give you tailored and bespoke input on how to devise and execute the best possible marketing plan to achieve the goals you’re aiming for. At a later date, we plan to expand the initiative to fully fledged, fully managed marketing campaigns – evolving the service in consultation with the community.

We have limited slots available for Indie Spotlight packages, and regrettably won’t be able to work with every developer who applies. We’re looking for the games that really stand out, and projects where we think we can add the most value – gathering feedback both from within our team and externally, to ensure a selection process led by a diverse range of voices and backgrounds.

FAQ.

We’re looking for unfunded or self-funded games from underrepresented indie developers. This might include marginalised genders, LGBTQ+ people, disabled people, and people from the global majority. Our goal is to be as inclusive as possible. If you’re wondering whether this initiative might be for you, it probably is!

We’re genre, style, and platform agnostic. We’re just as keen to see applications from developers working on a mobile puzzle game as a story-driven console epic. When selecting projects to accept, we will be asking two main questions: 1) does this project have real potential (think creativity, quality, unique stories to tell), and 2) do we believe we can add significant value in helping you to achieve your goals?

In selecting projects, we’ll be gathering feedback both from our own team and externally, ensuring to hear from a wide range of voices to mitigate the risk of unconscious bias and increase the diversity of our selections.

We’re firm believers that the best time to start thinking about marketing is as early as possible – and as such, we’ll happily consider applications from projects at various stages in development. As a rule, we can generally add much more value to unreleased projects, with plenty of lead time ahead of launch.

We very much see this current iteration of The Indie Spotlight as a starting point, from which we can build in the future. As Game If You Are grows as an agency, we want Spotlight to grow with it – to offer more substantive and long-term marketing support to an increasingly wide range of developers. Exactly what this looks like is a question we want to answer in consultation with our community and the developers that we work with. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
